"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

Ashes urn

There is no doubt that the 2005 Ashes Series is producing some wonderful entertainment.

Sport at its best.

It is also getting good coverage in the media. However, a small piece entitled Top of the charts by Sue Mott in today's Daily Telegraph had a rather sorry conclusion:

...

With its twisting plot and grimly determined characters whose eyes glare through the imprisoning grilles of their helmets, it is like watching a Clint Eastwood movie for five days with gaps for drink, replays and sleep. Men may disagree. More spacially-aware, they may like watching cricket simply to disagree with Hawkeye. Whatever the reason, we are hooked. For the first time since the inception of charts for the sale of computer games in 1997, cricket sits at No 1, with Brian Lara International Cricket being the country's best seller. Just wait for Andrew Flintoff's version.

Please, no!

Unless we expect the challenge to be settled by joystick in 10 years time, it would be more heartening to hear of hundres of youngsters starting to play the game.

Play the real thing.

Play up! Play up! And play the game!
